Rats
Rats are highly intelligent survivors and are classed as commensal rodents, meaning they live closely alongside humans. They learn their environment through their whiskers and body hairs, and they are naturally neophobic — cautious of new objects.
This is why DIY attempts can unintentionally make them more wary and harder to treat.
Rats have a diastema (a gap in their teeth) which allows them to hold food in their cheeks and carry it back to the nest. This is one reason you rarely see dead rats — they often die inside inaccessible areas.
Female rats can breed again immediately after giving birth, and they seek warm, safe nesting sites such as lofts, roof spaces, and cavity walls.
Mice
Mice can enter through gaps as small as 5mm, often squeezing in through airbricks during colder months.
Once inside, they can cause expensive damage by gnawing:
